The Bug eater is a "long term" solution to mosquitos. It will take up to 2-4 weeks to eliminate the population of females, because it targets the male (non-biting) mozzie. We no longer sell octenol, and it is not required for the bugeater to work.
Octenol (1-octen-3-ol) is a chemical used to attract biting insects such as mosquitos. Other names of Octenol areAmyl vinyl carbinol, 1-Vinylhexanol, Matsutake alcohol, Vinyl amyl carbinol, Vinyl hexanol, Matsuica alcohol, Mushroom alcohol and 3-Hydroxy-1-octene.
The molecular formula is C8 H16 O
Octenol is produced naturally in human perspiration, and is a naturally occurring by-product that comes from animals that ingest large amounts of vegetable matter, such as cattle. - it is sometimes called "cow's breath"
Octenol smells like mushroom, if you don`t like the smell, you can choose not to use it indoors. There may be some (untested) danger if ingested, so keep away from children. You can read a Material Safety Data Sheet here
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority says:
Octenol is a naturally-occurring compound found in plants, animals, edible fruits and vegetables, widely used as a flavouring ingredient in foods and is approved by the US FDA as a direct food additive, and is also approved by the Council of Europe as an artificial flavouring agent. The active constituent Octenol has been evaluated and approved by the APVMA, and the product has been placed in Schedule 6 of the SUSDP.
